Microsoft breaks Office links

19/12/2017 – in GoldMine, Techniques

There were several Windows updates and Office updates on 12th and 13th December 2017. One of the “features” of these was to disable DDE (Dynamic Data Exchange) in Word. As this is the method that GoldMine uses to insert data into Word templates then these updates have effectively broken GoldMine Plus for Microsoft Word.

Thanks Microsoft!

Luckily there is a fix, although it involves editing the registry. All the usual caveats apply (make sure that you know what you’re doing, back up the registry first, etc).

The key in question is: \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word\Security

(The version number, 16.0 in the above example, will depend on your installed version).

You should see a DWORD value called AllowDDE; if not, then you’ll need to create it.

Set the value to 2 and re-start the machine.
